This is an essay written by one of the students about International Woman’s Day!

International   Women’s  Day:

International Women’s Day is marked on March 8th every year. Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. One should be proud to be a woman and International Women’s Day is a day to celebrate being a woman. The day is used to express our respect, appreciation and love towards the most powerful gender: ‘woman’. ‘Woman’ is a word which brings a lot of images to our mind, such as selfless love, nurturing and caring attitude. A woman is a full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform understanding. A woman is a mystery, holding a lot of knowledge. A woman is the epicentre of love, sacrifice, care and ability to nurture life. Woman’s polite devotion is their greatest beauty.

The first International Women’s Day was celebrated in 1909 to honour the 1908 garment women’s strike in New York. The women were protesting their horrific working conditions, long hours and inadequate wages. Today, we gather on International woman’s Day to acknowledge all women: those in small remote villages, mountains, deserts, and refugee camps; those living in mud and straw homes, large urban cities and rural country sides; those in the workplace, the poor, the rich, and the unemployed; those in our schools, colleges and universities; those who are mothers, working women, and those who do both; those who are single, married, divorced or widowed; those who are young, older or physically disabled; those women we know and those who are strangers. Give them strength, courage, wisdom, grace, vision and fortitude. Every day is our new beginning. Learn about women’s struggle for equality around the world. Help out a close female friend or family member. Thank the women in your life. Treat women with respect.

Women are the largest untapped reservoir of talent in the world. If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman. Women are the real architects of society. However, it is still common for women to not receive higher education, not be allowed to make decisions, and only take care of their children. Domestic violence is the biggest cause of injury and death to women around the globe. Women empowerment claim their rights, such as the right to live their lives with a sense of self-worth, respect and dignity; have equal rights to participate in social, religious and public activities; have equal social status in the society, get equal opportunity for education; and have safe and comfortable working environments.

The International Women’s Day logo is in purple and white, features the symbol of Venus, which is also the symbol of being female. To create and keep this connection alive, let’s now spend some time connecting with one another with such events like seminars, conferences, dinners or breakfasts. We invite you to light your candles of solidarity to symbolize our connection with them and with each other. The best way to make this day special for women in your life, be it a mother, sister, wife, daughter or a friend is to bequeath her with lots of love, affection, respect and gifts in the form of flowers, jewellery, beautiful greetings cards, and lots of other goodies. We have to take a pledge that there will be total respect for women in our society and be sure to set an example of great respect, admiration and respect towards women. Increasingly, International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in history of their countries and communities.  Let’s praise womanhood for a happy neighbourhood.
